Mineral insulated thermocouples

Alongside resistance sensors, they are the most commonly used type of temperature sensor.

thermo-control Körtvélyessy GmbH does not manufacture mineral insulated cables itself, but purchases them pre-assembled from qualified partner companies. The cables are tested when the goods are received.

The test comprises two measurements. The first checks the body connection of the thermo wires against the sheath. The insulation resistance is then measured at room temperature with 75V and 500V test voltage to see whether it complies with the tolerances of DIN EN 611515.

After the test, the mineral insulated thermocouples are assembled according to the standard versions. If special designs are required, we will be happy to clarify and produce them after receiving your inquiry.

Production

Mineral insulated thermocouples are made from sheathed cables. These consist of a metallic sheath and a filling made of a ceramic insulating material. The actual thermocouple wires are located in this insulating material, which in many cases consists of high-purity magnesium oxide (MgO).

Due to the filling, the mineral insulated thermocouple can be bent without the internal thermocouple wires short-circuiting. The bending radius is relatively narrow at 12 x diameter and enables easy attachment to workpieces, for example.

Thinner mineral insulated thermocouples are therefore ideal for surface measurement. However, you should ensure that at least a length of 5 x the diameter is in place, otherwise measurement errorswill occur.

The sheathed cable is manufactured by rolling/drawing a metal tube. In this tube, with a diameter of around Ø80mm, ceramic sleeves are inserted through which rods made of the thermocouple alloy are guided.

By rolling/drawing the blank, the ceramic sleeves are literally pulverized and enclose the existing thermocouple wires. The assembly takes place by cutting off a length of cable. The thermocouple wires are welded at one end and the thermocouple is thus produced.

Depending on the requirements, either the space with the welding point is filled with MgO powder and closed with a cap, or the cap is placed directly on the welding point. In the first case, this is referred to as an insulated measuring tip, in the latter as an earthed measuring tip. Our mineral insulated thermocouples are in the standard version with an insulated measuring tip.
